The Government of Tamil Nadu consists of 29 cabinet ministers.. The Cabinet of the state of Tamil Nadu forms the executive branch of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Vidhan Sabha (Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly) consists of 234 members (MLA), and these members are elected for five years. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) formed the Government under the leadership of J. Jayalalithaa. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader J. Jayalalithaa took charge as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 16 May 2011 along with other ministers. Later O. Panneerselvam took charge as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 29 September 2014, after J. Jayalalithaa resigned from the CM post. Again J. Jayalalithaa took oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 23 May 2015.

There are two types of the minister in state government, which is determined by the position or grade. The superior or primary being Cabinet Ministers “Cabinet Minister” and the junior or secondary being “minister of State”.
